Havoc on the Accra-Winneba Highway in Okyereko Due to a Contractor's River Diversion

Due to a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway diverting the Ayensu River, there has been a severe distraction and disruption of vehicular traffic flow on the main Accra-Winneba highway.

Strong floodwaters from the diverted river have created a sizable gulley across the main route, leaving motorists trapped and facing significant obstacles.

Frustrated commuters have called for immediate action to repair the damaged road and for penalties to be placed on the contractor who caused the detour in response to the event.

Travel on a regular basis has been significantly impacted by the highway's collapse, underscoring the urgent need for prompt action to address the problem.

In addition, the contractor's actions have resulted in extensive consequences as more than 150 residences at Gomoa Mampong have flooded due to the Ayensu River's diversion.

The River Ayensu, which rises in the Eastern Region and meets the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region before emptying into the sea, is most affected by the diversion.

While restoration activities are continuing, commuters must use alternate routes at Winneba, according to Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
